Even without knowing the city and suburb limits, it is obvious that there is a distinct economic status on either side of 8 Mile Road. Take a drive down Woodward Ave crossing over 8 Mile Road and it will be overwhelmingly clear when you are crossing the city and suburb boundary. The borders of Ferndale were decided in July 1917, long before we knew what that diving line would eventually represent (How). Used to determine the upper and lower boundaries of counties in the southern half of Michigan, 8 Mile road (also known as “Baseline Road” outside of Metro Detroit) can be traced across Lake Michigan and into Illinois and Wisconsin. 8 Mile road has a strong history in the state of Michigan. What began as a trail for Native Americans eventually became a baseline for surveyors and now stands as a dividing line between city and suburbs.
